Ribot was an Italian-trained bay colt foaled in 1952 by Tenerani out of Romanella (El Greco). He was bred by the legendary Italian breeder Federico Tesio but foaled at the English National Sud. The colt was raced by Lydia Tesio and Mario della Rocchetta and trained by Ugo Penco.
Known as ‘il cavalo super.’ Ribot is without doubt one of the greatest racehorses of all time and retired unbeaten in 16 races. Most notably the colt won back-to-back Prix de l’Arc de Triomphes in 1955 and 1956 and also the King George in 1956. Other victories included the Gran Criterium, the Gran Premio del Jockey Club and the Gran Premio di Milano.
At Stud in England and the USA, Ribot was Leading Stallion in GB and Ireland in 1963, 1967 & 1968. His progeny include the two Arc winners Molvedo and Prince Royal; and Ragusa, winner of the Irish Derby, King George, St Leger and Eclipse Stakes; Long Look (Oaks); Ribocco and Ribero, full-brothers who both won the Irish Derby and St Leger Classic-double; and another St Leger winner in Boucher. In American racing famous progeny included Tom Rolfe (Preakness) and Arts And Letters (Belmont).
