Silver salver awarded to the jockey Stan Mellor for winning the Whitbread Gold Cup on Frenchman's Cove at Sandown Park on 28th April 1962, the silver pie crust salver engraved THE WHITBREAD GOLD CUP SANDOWN PARK 28TH APRIL 1962, raised upon four pad supports, hallmarked Sheffield 1960 by Poston Products Ltd, diameter 25cm., weight 500gms., sold with a Tiffany & Co silver plated bowl commemorating the Whitbread Gold Cup Winners Reunion on the 25th April 1992, stamped Tiffany & Co on the base, 11 by 6cm., each bearing minor surface scratches, (2) The Whitbread Gold Cup was the first commercially sponsored horse race, dating from 1957 sponsored by Whitbread Brewers at the instigation of Colonel Bill Whitbread, the company's chairman, who had twice ridden in the Grand National as an amateur jockey.
