offering a unique and comprehensive representation of the thoroughbred in the second half of the 20th century, the hair contained in sleeves within six albums, with cards annotated in the hand of Ray Goddard, occasionally typescript, detailing the horse, pedigree and dated with the whereabouts of the acquisition, the hair trophies mostly neatly plaited (by Ray's wife Mary), otherwise unplaited locks, occasionally a smaller quantity of strands. The six hair albums come with a large quantity of back up letters and photographs relating to Ray Goddard's lifetime pursuit of amassing this extraordinary collection, mostly at stud farms and stallion stations, also at trainer's yards and at racecourse stables in Great Britain, Ireland, France and also the USA, some hairs sent remotely after requests by letters, and some acquired privately from other collectors or individuals in racing, the collector also obtained horseshoes and other memorabilia over this period that is being offered elsewhere in the sale, also the auctioneer found that there were duplicate acquisitions of 32 horses contained within the albums, one of the samples has therefore been removed to be offered as individual lots elsewhere in the auction, leaving a total of 829 individual champions being offered in this main lot. The lot contains a large quantity of supporting material including privately taken photographs on the occasions of stables, stud farms and racecourse visits to collect the hair; also two albums and a scrapbook containing many signed letters from stud farms, breeders, owners, trainers etc. obtained during the course of assembling the collection, signatures amongst many others including John Dunlop, Pat Donoghue, Peter Walwyn, Josh Gifford, Brough Scott, Roger Charlton, Lord Oaksey, Tom Dowdeswell, John Hislop, John Waugh, W R M Oswald, Clive Brittain, Alec Stewart, Patrick McCalmont, Sir Gordon Richards, Fred Winter, Michael Seth-Smith, Sean Magee, Peter Willett, Fank Berry, Olin B Gentry, Jack Jarvis, Doug Smith, Herbert Blagrave, Dick Hern, John Gosden, Claude Duval, Ian Balding, Jim Fitzgerald (Ballymany), Victor Gilpin etc.
