Cantelo was a bay filly foaled in 1956 by Chanteur out of Rustic Bridge (Bois Roussel). She was bred and raced by the famous bookmaker William Hill and trained by Charles Elsey at the Highfield Stables in Malton.

The filly won 8 of her 11 races and was unbeaten in five as a two-year-old. Her most important victory was in the 1959 St Leger. Other notable wins came in the Royal Lodge Stakes, the Cheshire Oaks and the Ribblesdale Stakes.

At Stud the best of her offspring was Cambridge who won the Blue Riband Trial Stakes at Epsom.
