Halling was an American-bred chestnut colt foaled in 1991 by Diesis out of Dance Machine (Green Dancer). He was originally raced by his breeder Cyril Humphris and trained by John Gosden to win the Cambridgeshire in 1994. At the end of the year he was sold to the Godolphin operation and sent to Saeed bin Suroor.
In 1995 and 1996 the colt pulled off the notable feat of back-to-back Eclipse Stakes and International Stakes victories. He also won the G1 Prix d’Ispahan.
At Stud, his G1 winning progeny comprised Jack Hobbs (Irish Derby), Cavalryman (Grand Prix de Paris), Cutlass Bay (Prix Ganay), Desert Encounter (Canadian International) and Empoli (Preis von Europa).
