Pennekamp was a US-bred bay colt foaled in 1992 by Bering out of Coral Dance (Green Dancer). He was owned by Sheikh Mohammed and trained in France by Andre Fabre.
As a 2-y-o the colt won twice at G1 level in the Prix De La Salamandre and the Dewhurst Stakes, and at Newmarket in 1995 won the 2,000 Guineas to remain unbeaten in six races. Unfortunately, Pennekamp picked up a leg injury in the Derby where he started as a short-priced favourite and was unable to race again.
At stud his best performer was probably under National Hunt Rules with Penzance who won the Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.
