Alfred Charles Havell (British, 1855-1928) AYRSHIRE, THE 1888 EPSOM DERBY WINNER IN HIS BOX AT HEATH HOUSE STABLES, NEWMARKET signed and inscribed AYRSHIRE, oil on canvas, 25.5 by 30.5cm., gilt frame, overall 36.5 by 41.5cm., good condition Ayrshire was a bay colt foaled in 1885 by Hampton out of Atalanta. He was owned by the 6th Duke of Portland, trained by George Dawson at Heath House Stables, Newmarket, and was ridden to victory in the Epsom Derby by Fred Barrett. Ayrshire also won the 2,000 Guineas, and as a four-year-old the Eclipse Stakes at Sandown Park. As a juvenile he first advertised his ability by winning the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster. At stud Ayrshire sired two Epsom Oaks winners Airs And Graces and Our Lassie; and in the USA the Belmont Stakes winner Bowling Brook. Provenance: Back of frame bearing an Arthur Ackermann & Son exhibition label, and Sotheby's London sticker and chalking.
