From the Pat Eddery Collection: a racing plate worn by English Prince when winning the 1974 Irish Derby at The Curragh, mounted on an onyx ashtray with plaque inscribed ENGLISH PRINCE, 4 RACES, £91,000, IRISH DERBY 1974 English Prince was an Irish-bred bay colt (1971) by Petingo out of English Miss (Bois Roussel) and trained by Peter Walwyn in England at Lambourn. Stable jockey Pat Eddery missed out on the ride in the Irish Derby as he was serving a suspension. The French jockey Yves Saint-Martin stepped in as the fortunate beneficiary. It would seem that the owner and trainer reserved one of the horse's plates for Pat by way of compensation as a memento. Pat Eddery would win his first Irish Derby the following year on Grundy.
