A racing plate worn by Ardross when winning the 1982 Doncaster Cup, mounted on a board with a print of Lester Piggott and an engraved plaque, the reverse with a framed signed and typed note on Henry Cecil letterhead stating the provenance, signed in ink, 23.7 x 23.3 cm. Ardross (1976-94) was best known as an outstanding two mile stayer but also won at varying middle distances. Originally trained in his native Ireland by Paddy Prendergast, he was sold to Charles St George and moved to England to be trained by Henry Cecil in 1981, when under regular pilot Lester Piggott he won the Yorkshire, Ascot and Goodwood Cups and finished fifth in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. As a six-year-old in 1982, he claimed his second Yorkshire and Ascot Gold Cup in addition to the Doncaster Cup, Geoffrey Freer and Jockey Club Stakes and ended a glittering career just losing out by a head to Akiyda in the Arc, his final race.
