Wilkes & Son back-and-white archival print, Wilkes and Son copyright stamp The 1939 West Indies tour to England was cut short by preparations for the Second World War and the final four matches were cancelled after the Oval Test. The traditional tour start was made at the County Ground, Worcester in May and the team pictured in front of the pavilions contained two of the Caribbean's greatest players and influences. Learie Constantine (knighted in 1969 and made a Lord eight years later) is seated to the right of skipper Rolph Grant, and master batsman George Headley to the left.
