Muhammad Ali signed pair of Everlast sparring mitts, both signed and dated 18th February 1989, the mitts were worn by Muhammad Ali whilst training at his private gym and presented to his friend Paddy Monaghan Provenance: Convery Auctions, 16th November 2009, lot 28. Paddy Monaghan from County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, started a campaign to get Muhammad Ali's boxing licence reinstated when he was stripped of that and his Heavyweight Title in 1967 for refusing to join the US Army's war effort in Vietnam. Monaghan oversaw a petition that accumulated 22,224 signatures, later wrote to President Richard Nixon to plead Ali's case, and as a results of his efforts he and his family became close friends of the boxing champion. Paddy Monaghan is not the present seller of the mitts.
