The trophy for the 1970 Grand National won by Mr A J Chambers' ''Gay Trip'', a 9ct. gold & onyx sculptural trophy by Boodle and Dunthorne Ltd., Liverpool, inscribed PRESENTED BY MESSRS TOPHAMS LTD., WON BY MR A.J. CHAMBERS' GAY TRIP, vertical filigree block lettering around collar of onyx block reading THE GRAND NATIONAL STEEPLECHASE 1970, surmounted by an elongated gold cross with inset cross and horse shoes, upper section of cross has a rose gold scroll engraved THE WORLD'S BLUE RIBAND OF STEEPLECHASING, the whole topped with Pegasus, the Greek mythological winged stallion, height 33.5cm., 13 1/4in. Gay Trip provided trainer Fred Rimell with the third of his four Grand National winners in 1970, his other winners being ESB in 1956, Nicolaus Silver in 1961 and Rag Trade in 1976. He also gace jockey Pat Taaffe, the rider of Arkle, his second Grand National winner having won on Quare Times in 1955. Gay Trip benefited from fallers in front of him and eventually came home the winner by 20 lengths. He carried top weight of 11st. 5lb., only Red Rum since has been a top weighted winner. There was also stamina doubts as Gay Trip, a former flat racer, who had had never won at a distance further than 2 1/2 miles. He was due to have been ridden by Terry Biddlecombe who was ruled out due to injury.
