A silver vesta case by Sampson Mordan commissioned as a token of good luck for the racehorse 'Surefoot' 1889-1890, the obverse with an enamelled jockey, the reverse with enamel horse shoe and inscribed GOOD LUCK TO SUREFOOT, 1889-1890, 4.5 by 3cm., 1 3/4 by 1 /4in., areas of enamel loss to jockey Surefoot was owned by Mr A W Merry, trained at Lambourn by Charles Jousiffe and was ridden to victory in the 1890 2,000 Guineas by John Liddiard. In defeat Surefoot holds the dubious distinction of being the shortest priced loser of the Epsom Derby, when he finished 4th to Sainfoin at odd of 40-95.
