A 1909 F.A. Cup runners-up medal awarded to the Bristol City goalkeeper Harry Clay, in 9ct. gold, inscribed THE FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION, CHALLENGE CUP, RUNNERS UP, B.C.F.C., H.CLAY, 1908-9 In the 1909 F.A. Cup final was played at The Crystal Palace on 24th April. Bristol City were defeated 1-0 by Manchester United who scored through Sandy Turnbull midway through the first half. It was the first time that either team had reached the final tie. It remains the only time Bristol City have done so. Harry Clay played in every round of the competition. It was a tortuous route with every tie except the 3rd round going to a replay.
