A 9ct. gold & enamel Wigan RFC medal commemorating the club's victory over the New Zealand Rugby league team in 1907, the diamond shaped medal set with a model rugby ball along each side, central enamel Wigan crest, inscribed WIGAN RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB, FIRST DEFEAT OF THE NEW ZEALAND TEAM, F. BATTERSBY, 1907 A then record crowd estimated between 25,000 and 30,000 spectators packed into Central Park on 9th November 1907 to see the first ever New Zealand Rugby League touring team. Wigan won the match 12-8 and each player received a gold commemorative medal. The example here was presented to the Wigan scrum-half Frank Battersby who had a fleeting career with the Lancashire club making his debut 1st April 1907 v Oldham, and his 14th and last game was against Merthyr Tydfil 19th October 1907, a game when he scored his one and only try in a cherry & white shirt. The Wigan game was New Zealand's 14th match of the tour and up until this point they were undefeated on English soil.
