A 15ct. gold Sheffield United 1897-98 Championship medal presented to club director Maurice Dodsworth, the obverse inscribed SHEFFIELD UNITED CRICKET & FOOTBALL CLUB, the reverse cast with a depiction of the Football League Championship trophy in raised relief and inscribed LEAGUE WINNERS, 1897 1898, the rim inscribed M.I. DODSWORTH In season 1897-98 Sheffield United were crowned Football League Division One Champions for the only occasion of their history. The topped the table with 42 points, five clear of the nearest rivals Sunderland. The 'Blades' were also proclaimed British champions after prevailing in a series of challenge matches against Scottish champions Celtic. It is recorded that the Club directors received medals as well as the Sheffield United players. Maurice Dodsworth served as a committee member and director at Bramall Lane for 30 years until his death in 1908. He mainly presided over the cricket section of the club.
