Memorabilia relating to Peter Latham, a Queen's Club 4 by 6in. photograph circa 1890 with Peter Latham and the Club's staff assembled just inside the Club's gates; a tennis postcard - Peter Latham from 'The Umpire' Paper circa 1900, rare but in fairly poor condition; sold together with three Photographs of Peter Latham & Friends, the largest 5 by 7in; also included are some press cuttings and two photographs of the Petworth Court, Sussex, in 1902. Peter Latham joined the staff in 1888, he was 22 years old. The potted biography on the back of the postcard in this lot describes Latham as 'the beau ideal of an athlete ? it is probable that he will not receive his quietus for a lengthened period.' In the Queen's Club group photograph, Peter Latham, the Club Real Tennis and Rackets Professional stands on the right, others with lawn tennis rackets are on the left. The gentleman standing in the centre wearing a three piece suit and tall-sided black bowler hat is the Head Gentlemen's Dressing Room Attendant. The ball boys are all wearing Club sweaters - hooped - with the Club's name embroidered in white. The smartly dressed gentleman on the left is probably the Club's Accountant or Chief Clerk. Behind the group appears to be a horse carriage. Up until the First World War, a pony and trap would pick up Members from Hyde Park Corner and also Baron's Court Station to transport then to the Club. The chap holding the pint of beer is the Groom, for it was traditional for them to drink beer. Amongst the other photographs in this lot is an image of Latham and Captain Robin K. Price 'on court,' and family member groups.
