The Manna 1925 Derby silks, the jacket in the rose colours of owner Mr H E Morriss worn by Steve Donoghue when winning the 1925 Derby, by Merry & Co., St James Street, London, mounted, framed & glazed, 86.5 by 71cm., 34 by 28in.; sold together with a signed letter of provenance confirming that the silks were acquired from the trainer Fred Darling of Beckhampton; the lot also including a period b&w press photograph of Manna with Steve Donoghue up (3) Manna was foaled in Ireland in 1922 by Phalaris out of Waffles and was bought by Mr Morriss, a wealthy bullion broker based in Shanghai, at the Doncaster Yearlings sale for 6,300 guineas, the second highest price of the auction. Manna was one of trainer Fred Darling's record equalling seven Derby winners. Manna also won the 2,000 Guineas in 1925. The colt was Steve Donoghue's sixth and last Derby winner and the fourth he achieved during the decade. The National Horseracing Museum at Newmarket have a painting of Steve Donoghue in their collection by the artist W Smithson Broadhead. Donoghue is wearing the Morriss silks in the portrait.
