An iron-willed innings of 97 by Gautam Gambhir together with the proverbial captain's innings of 91 from M S Dhoni were the cornerstones of the highest successful run chase in Cricket World Cup finals history; India surpassing Sri Lanka's formidable target of 274 with ten balls and six wickets to spare. At 31-2, the tension in the home crowd was palpable, until Gambhir and Virat Kohli steadied the ship with a third wicket stand of 83 that laid the foundation for India's final push for glory. As one commentator asserted: ''Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli epitomise a generation of Indian cricketers who do not easily accept defeat.'' After Kohli's departure the indomitable Gambhir then shared a partnership of 109 with his skipper M S Dhoni, before disappointingly falling three short of his century, leaving Yuvraj Singh to be at the crease with the captain as victory was achieved. Gautam Gambhir was the sixth highest scorer in the tournament with 393 runs.
