The paddock blanket of H.R.H. The Prince of Wales's 1900 Grand National winner Ambush II, by R. Scrogham & Co. of 13 Ranelagh Street, Liverpool, embroidered both sides with a royal crest above rose, thistle and shamrock national emblems and inscribed AMBUSH II, banded border and chording in purple, gold, red & black Ambush II was a bay gelding bred by Mr William Ashe of Narraghmore, Co. Kildare, in 1894 by Ben Battle out of Miss Plant. He was trained by Gratton Wildman Lushington and bought for the Prince of Wales by Lord Marcus Beresford. Ambush II won a total of eight steeplechases including the 1900 Grand National, ridden by Algy Anthony. Ambush II won the National by four lengths from Barsac with the outstanding Aintree hero Manifesto a neck back in third carrying 12st 13lb., 24lb. more than the winner. The heir to the throne made his way onto the course to lead in his winner to ''cheers ringing long and loud'' with a ''thousand hats tossed into the sky.'' 1900 was a year of unparalleled success on the Turf for the Prince of Wales. In addition to his Grand National victory, the Prince's colt Diamond Jubilee won flat racing's Triple Crown, the 2,000 Guineas, Derby and St Leger.
