Socrates: a signed white Corinthians No.8 jersey circa 1982, signed in blue marker pen besides the club badge, short-sleeved, lettered SOCRATES below badge S?crates was born in Ribeir?o Preto in S?o Paulo state 19th February 1954. As one of the best midfielders in football history, renowned for his vision, passing skills and goalscoring record, S?crates played for, and captained, Brazil in the 1982 and 1986 FIFA World Cups and was capped 60 times. He began playing football professionally in 1974 for Botafogo in Ribeir?o Preto, but spent the majority of his career (1978 to 1984) with Corinthians in S?o Paulo making 297 appearances and scoring 172 goals. He used his position as a famous and popular footballer to challenge the existing military dictatorship. During his time there he co-founded the Corinthians Democracy movement. S?crates also had spells with the Italian club Fiorentina and the Brazilian clubs Flamengo and Santos towards the end of his career.
