A statement of account for the provision of cricket bats and balls dated 1865/66, written in pen and ink to J. Maister Esq as debtor to Edward Lister of Barton in North Yorkshire for work carried out between September 1865 and September 1866, the statement including lines for 6 bats & 6 balls 13 shillings, 2 bats and balls painting & varnishing 1 shilling and eight pence, and 2 bat heads 1 shilling 4 pence, Displayed in a perspex frame In the census of 1871 there was only one J. Maister, namely John Maister, age 52, of Bedale, North Yorkshire. He was born at Winestead in about 1819. The Maisters were a cricketing family. Henry Maister (Christened Winestead, 27th July 1813) played two first-class matches for the M.C.C. in 1832, and for Stockton against the All England Eleven at Stockton-on-Tees in September 1849, when the match was drawn. A. Maister played for Bedale against the All England Eleven at Bedale CC in May 1849. Wisden took a total of 17 wickets in this match for the All England XI who won by 170 runs. This statement of account is a very rare survival of a commission for cricketing equipment supplied at this time by a country carpenter to a local cricket playing family..
