BUCHAN, evidently in the wrong case which is inscribed LONDON FOOTBALL COMBINATION Charlie Buchan was born in Plumstead in 1891 and joined his local club Woolwich Arseanl in 1909. However the centre-forward left the club after and unsettled argument with manager George Morrell in 1911 to join Leyton before transferring to Sunderland a season later. The medal sold in this lot relates to his time at Sunderland. He was resigned to Arsenal by Herbert Chapman and as well as being an important goalscorer he is attributed as working closely with Chapman tactically and co-invented Arsenal's famous 'WM' field formation. After his playing days, Charles Buchan is fondly remembered as a writer and for editing his own magazine Charles Buchan's Football Monthly.
