A pair of Benny Lynch's boxing gloves, brown leather, elastic to wrists, left glove with original lacing and inscribed inside in pen with the initials BL Benny Lynch was born in the Gorbals, Glasgow, 2nd April 1913. The lightweight fought in 81 bouts between 1931 & 1938 and progressed through the Scottish, British & European titles before being crowned World Champion when defeating Jackie Brown in Manchester in 1935. Lynch was Scotland's first ever world boxing champion and was afforded a hero's welcome by the people of Glasgow on his return to the city. On 19th January 1937 Lynch won a unification world title fight against Small Montana at the Haringey Arena in London. His later career was blighted by drink problems and he died prematurely at the age of 33 through pneumonia brought on by malnutrition and alcoholism on 8th August 1946.
