Vinyl Examination
December not only sees the jolly man in the red costume trying to get in your house by climbing down the chimney, but our next Vinyl & Pop Culture Timed Auction for the lovers of all things plastic to cast their eyes over at their leisure.
This will be our third outing and, once again, the vinyl gods have thrown some real rarities and interesting lots into the mix to offer to all out there. It's hard to pick key lots when, like those reading this, you are a collector and fan yourself. But it has to be said that the second instalment of the late Rick Sander’s personal collection has thrown some real curve balls at us with yet more fantastic original Advanced Demo Copy 45’s coming to light, straddling the genres from psychedelia, Blue Beat and pop all the way to Tamla Motown and folk. The collection also features rare releases from The Doors, Adam Faith and a real host of rare and forgotten musical gems and nuggets to tempt and entice.
From the late Mr Sander's also comes the complete working manuscript from his 1976 book on the Pink Floyd, the first written on one of the greatest bands of them all. It includes notations, interviews and all that came to make up the tome. A must for any true lover of the groundbreaking Cambridge born giants. There are also communications from EMI on the band, black and white press photographs and a host of other fascinating associated lots. I love a correspondence from the great British eccentric and Bonzo Viv Stanshall to Rick on his own unique headed paper - check out the paperwork in the catalogue - some truly great stuff.
I always said it would be nice to get a few vintage pieces of equipment at some point, and from the same collection we have a 1962 Burns Sonic electric bass in its case - road worn and with fabulous patina. It’s a great example of the company’s work back then, a brand that was backed by bands like The Shadows and used even by George Harrison of The Beatles. The piece has also gained in status and demand due to its place in the history of the development of guitars. Burns were a true innovator back in the day, and its great to have an unmolested example in our sale.
We also have a superbly decorated Bristol snare drum signed by The Floyd’s Nick Mason and a period 1960’s portable harmonium once the property of Dave Rotheray, co- conspirator of people’s poet Paul Heaton in The Beautiful South, if you fancy using it to write a few pieces of music for yourself whilst “on the road”.
As ever, there are some cracking LP’s! This includes my personal fave, the groovy, hip and out there ”Sounds of 65” from the superb Graham Bond Organization, featuring a pre Cream Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce, one of the best all round original copies of the statement that was “All Things Must Pass” by George Harrison (including its poster). Plus some nice Beatles, Stones, Who, Kinks and Hendrix alongside The Smiths, Angelic Upstarts, Oasis, Bowie and loads more.
If you want to start collecting, there is something for every pocket and purse, from an original Beatles Tea Towel estimated at between £20-£30 to a sealed Rolling Stones Mono Box set featuring everyone of their Decca era classic albums and book at well over £1000. So make sure you have a good look at the catalogue when it goes live on December 5th! There are 250 exciting lots and the benefit of a timed sale to pick out and put your maximum bids on the lots you want - it couldn’t be more simple.
Good bidding!
