In the final played on 23rd April 1904 at Crystal Palace, City defeated Bolton Wanderers 1-0 thus giving the Manchester club their first-ever major trophy

Burgess, born in Openshaw, Manchester started his playing career with Glossop North End, before being signed by City. A determined left back, he won 4 England Caps, playing away against Wales, Ireland and Scotland in 1904 and Scotland again in 1906. He also represented the Football League, on at least 2 occasions
In 1903-1904 Burgess won an English Cup Winners Medal, in City’s team that beat Bolton Wanderers 1-0 at Crystal Palace. In 1907-1908, he won a League Champions medal, as part of United’s first such success, and at the end of that season he played in the very first Charity Shield match, against Southern League winners, Queens Park Rangers at Stamford Bridge. The game ended in a 1-1 draw
Having left United at the end of the 1909-1910 season, Burgess played in Copenhagen for Kristiania before moving on to MTK Budapest for whom he played between 1914 and 1918. Later he managed MTK, 1921-1922, before managing in Italy, between 1922 and 1932, Padova twice, Milan and Roma
