Hoof of the steeplechaser Mount Prospect's Fortune winner of the Scottish Grand National and other important races between 1907 and 1911,
converted as a hallmarked silver-mounted inkwell, the hinged lid inscribed:
FROM ROBERT GORE TO P. NELKE ESQ., MOUNT PROSPECT'S FORTUNE 1902-1912, WON, CHAMPION STEEPLECHASE, LIVERPOOL, 1907 [this race was run over the Grand National fences]; GRAND MILITARY GOLD CUP, SANDOWN, 1908; SCOTTISH GRAND NATIONAL, EGLINGTON HUNT, 1909; SANDOWN GRAND ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL STEEPLECHASE 1911; STAKES AMOUNTING TO £2830; sold together with a further horse hoof converted inkwell for a horse called Shamrock who died as a 3-y-o in 1888, with brass fitting, inscription quite rubbed but the inkwell appears to have been used for a racquets competition prize in December 1888, one of the winning players being A.T. Forbes, (2 items).
