Daylami was a grey colt foaled in 1994 by Doyoun out of Daltawa (Miswaki. He was bred and raced by HH The Aga Khan and trained in France by Alain de Royer-Dupre with whom he won the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (French 1,000 Guineas). At the end of his three-year-old season Daylami was sold to Godolphin, although a joint-ownership arrangement was set in place for breeding rights. In two seasons thereafter the colt recorded victories in the Tattersalls Gold Cup, Eclipse Stakes, Man o’War Stakes, Coronation Cup, King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Irish Champion Stakes and Breeders’ Cup Turf. In 1999 he was voted Champion European Horse of the Year; and Champion Male Turf Horse in the USA.

The colt proved a late developer and did not race as a two-year-old. As a three-year-old he made up for lost time recording major wins in the Lockinge Stakes, Prix Quincey, Wills (now the Celebration) Mile and Prix du Moulin.

At Stud, the best of his progeny was Grey Swallow who won the Irish Derby and Tattersalls Gold Cup. He also sired the Triumph Hurdle winner Zaynar.
