Charlottown was a British-bred bay colt foaled in 1963 by Charlottesville out of Meld (Alycidon). He was raced by Lady Zia Wernher.
The colt was trained as a two-year-old by Towser Gosden and was unbeaten in three races including the Solario Stakes and The Horris Hill. Towser Gosden was forced to retire at the end of the season through ill-health and the Heath House stables at Lewes were taken over by Gordon Smyth.
Having lost his unbeaten record in the Lingfield Derby Trial, for which jockey Ron Hutchinson had been criticised, Scobie Breasley picked up the ride at Epsom and won The Derby with a late run to get up by a neck. Charlottown stayed in training as a four-year-old and won the Coronation Cup back at Epsom.
At Stud, he was not a success although through the maternal line appears in the pedigrees of two Classic winners North Light and Golan.
