Nashwan was a chestnut colt foaled in 1986 by Blushing Groom out of Height Of Fashion (Bustino). He was bred and raced by Hamdan Al Maktoum and trained at West Ilsley by Dick Hern.
After winning his both starts as a two-year-old, Nashwan developed into an outstanding performer at three winning four consecutive G1 races the 2,000 Guineas, the Derby, the Eclipse Stakes and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. This remains a unique achievement in the same season. Following a mystifyingly poor performance in the Prix Neil, the decision was taken to miss the Arc and retire Nashwan.
At Stud, his most successful offspring were Swain (dual winner of the King George) and the Arc winner Bago and the International Stakes winning filly One So Wonderful.
