Mtoto was a British-bred bay colt foaled in 1983 by Busted out of Amazer (Mincio). He was raced by Ahmed Al Maktoum and trained at Newmarket by Alec Stewart.
The colt’s early career was dogged by foot problems but he was outstanding in 1987 and 1988. Aged four he won the Brigadier Gerard Stakes, The Prince of Wales’s Stakes and the Eclipse Stakes. At five Mtoto repeated his successes in the Prince of Wales and Eclipse and added the King George, the Festival Stakes and the Select Stakes. His unbeaten 1988 campaign came to a narrow end when finishing a 1/2l runner up to Tony Bin in the Arc.
At Stud, he sired the Derby winner Shaamit and the Ascot Gold Cup winner Celeric. He also became an influence in National Hunt pedigrees as grandsire of the champion steeplechaser Denman and the Grand National winner Ballabriggs.
