Reference Point was a bay colt foaled in 1984 by Mill Reef out of Home On The Range (Habitat). He was bred and raced by Louis Freedman and trained at Newmarket by Henry Cecil.
The colt won 7 of his 10 career races with his first G1 coming as a 2-y-o in the Futurity. His 3-y-o campaign saw him win the Dante before his most notable victory in the Derby. Then followed G1 successes in the King George at Ascot and the St Leger, having previously won the recognised York trial in the Great Voltigeur. Reference Point was voted British Horse of the Year in 1987.
At Stud he proved disappointing, siring just the one G1 winner Ivyanna (Oaks d’Italia).
