Machiavellian was an American-bred bay colt foaled in 1987 by Mr Prospector out of Coup De Folie (Halo). He was owned by Stavros Niarchos and trained in France by Francois Boutin.

Machiavellian won four of his seven career starts including two G1 races, the Prix Morny and the Prix De La Salamandre. The colt started favourite for the 1990 2,000 Guineas but was beaten by the Richard Hannon-trained Tirol.

He was retired to the Dalham Hall Stud where he enjoyed plenty of success, siring amongst many others the Dubai World Cup winners Street Cry and Almutawakel; and for Cheveley Park Medicean, winner of the Lockinge, Queen Anne & Eclipse.
