£15,000 - £20,000
Stanley Matthews 9ct gold Division 2 League Championship medal, the obverse inscribed THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE, CHAMPIONS DIVISION 2, the reverse inscribed SEASON 1962-63, in original fitted case
Stanley Matthews returned to Stoke after an absence of 28 years. In the final match of the season, Matthews scored his only goal of the season in the 2-0 defeat of Luton Town, the result ensured Stoke gained promotion to Division 1. Stoke went up as Second Division champions, and Matthews was voted FWA Footballer of the Year for the second time in his career, 15 years after he was made the inaugural winner of the award. Aged 48 when he picked up this award, he became the oldest winner of the award by a wide margin, and remains so more than half a century later.
