He was a local lad born in Salford 27th September 1932 and a Busby Babe who had come through the club's youth system. The left-back was largely an understudy for club captain Roger Byrne and made only 12 first-team appearances but was nevertheless highly-rated by manager Matt Busby who fended off interest in the player from other First Division clubs
