However, the Football League refused to allow United to play in the competition. As the draw had already been made, Berne Young Boys were given a bye to the First Round, but the two home & away fixture dates that had been reserved by the clubs were employed with two friendly matches between the English and Swiss sides. The autographs include an added "Tommy Taylor", perhaps the original menu recipient, a lady called Olive, lamenting the fact that fate had denied her favourite player from being part of the proceedings.
