Autographed dinner menu for the Berne Young Boys v Manchester United match 1st October 1958, held at the Midland Hotel, Manchester, 1st October 1958, the back cover signed by United manager Matt Busby and nine members of the Young Boys party including the coach, menu in somewhat grubby condition, a previous owner has also erroneously changed the date of the menu Although not English League champions, UEFA extended Manchester United a special invitation to play in the 1958-59 European Cup preliminary round following the tragic events of the Munich Air Disaster the previous season, while returning from a European Cup tie in Belgrade. However, the Football League refused to allow United to play in the competition. As the draw had already been made, Berne Young Boys were given a bye to the First Round, but the two home & away fixture dates that had been reserved by the clubs were employed with two friendly matches between the English and Swiss sides. The autographs include an added "Tommy Taylor", perhaps the original menu recipient, a lady called Olive, lamenting the fact that fate had denied her favourite player from being part of the proceedings.
