Pair of Victorian silver plated candlesticks presented as a prize at the Athletic Sports Day at Clapham Rovers Football Club in 1891, modelled as Corinthian columns, the base of each inscribed identically CLAPHAM ROVERS F.C. SPORTS, 1891, INVITATION RACE, 2nd PRIZE, WON BY, height 16cm., wear to plating, otherwise good, (2) The famous early amateur football club Clapham Rovers have their name on the F.A. Cup trophy, being winners in season 1879-80. They played in the inaugural year of the competition in 1871-72 and indeed scored the first goal in the competition's history, Jarvis Kenrick netting the first in a 3-0 victory over Upton Park 11th November 1871. The club announced it was ceasing activities in 1914 following the outbreak of the First World War, and never re-emerged in the subsequent peacetime.
