Badminton/Battledore/Hagoita/Lawn Tennis: a hagoita silk and wooden bat, circa 1920, of rectangular form, obverse silk, applied with a lady lawn tennis players, bearing painted flower and inscription translated 'Active girls are typical of modern society. Aunts are from the past' and signed; reverse wooden painted with foliate decoration, 37 by 15cm.; sold with a colour postcard featuring Japanese ladies playing the game and titled 'Battledore and Shuttlecock', 9 by 14cm., (2) Each bearing slight wear, wear to silk on bat, bearing signs of marks and dirt, slight wear to corners of postcard. Hagoita is a Japanese bat used in a historic pastime similar to Battledore and Shuttlecock, played in the New Year by Japanese ladies.
