Racing plate of General Peace, 1900 Auteuil Hurdle winner, ridden by Ernie Piggott, mounted on a silver-bordered red leather photo frame with easel support, the horseshoe encircling a colour-tinted photographic portrait of Ernie Piggott by J. Robinson & Sons Photographers, Regent Street London and Grafton Street Dublin, above a silver plaque inscribed PLATE OF GENERAL PEACE, WINNER OF THE AUTEUIL HURDLE RACE 6th JUNE 1900, overall 22 by 19cm., the frame and plaque both stamped for Alfred Clark of Old Bond Street, the plaque hallmarked London 1900. Backboard and easel support detached. The Auteuil Hurdle, also referred to as the Grande Course de Haies d'Auteuil or the French Champion Hurdle, is a Group 1 hurdle race dating from 1874 and is still run every June. Ernie Piggott was the grandfather of Lester Piggott and rode the winners of three Grand Nationals, most notably Jerry M in 1912 (see lot 345). The other wins in 1918 and 1919 were wartime substitutes ran at Gatwick, on the site now occupied by the airport. All glass will be removed from framed and glazed items prior to posting and may result in delays to shipping your items. (This service is included in the cost of postage and packing).
