The Auteuil Hurdle, also referred to as the Grande Course de Haies d'Auteuil or the French Champion Hurdle, is a Group 1 hurdle race dating from 1874 and is still run every June. Ernie Piggott was the grandfather of Lester Piggott and rode the winners of three Grand Nationals, most notably Jerry M in 1912 (see lot 345). The other wins in 1918 and 1919 were wartime substitutes ran at Gatwick, on the site now occupied by the airport.
