Silver-mounted 1881 Epsom Derby whip, the wooden whip with handle mounted in metal and with applied cut lettering DERBY, 1881, wound thread to lower end, length 61cm., there would have been a leather flap at the bottom of the whip originally The 1881 Derby winner Iroquois (see also lot 71), ridden by Fred Archer, famously became the first American-bred winner of the Epsom classic. He was owned by the American tobacco magnate Pierre Lorrilard. Provenance: Stride & Son Auctioneers, 6th September 2018. The seller at this auction obtained the whip from Joyce Parkins. It was a family heirloom from her grandfather who worked at the Newmarket stables of Iroquois's American-born racehorse trainer Jacob Pincus (1838-1919).
