Rosa Corder (1853-1893) PORTRAIT OF THE JOCKEY FRED ARCHER signed, oil on canvas, executed in 1883, 66 by 61cm., framed Rosa Corder was the daughter of Micah Corder (1808-88), a London merchant, and Charlotte Hill. She trained as a portrait painter under Felix Moscheles and Frederick Sandys and exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts and the Grosvenor Gallery. She had a studio in Southampton Row, London, and another in Newmarket where she painted racehorses and portraits of racing personalities. Her portrait of Archer is unquestionably the finest artistic record left to us of the Victorian Turf legend. Frederick James Archer was born in Cheltenham 11 January 1857. He was the outstanding jockey of his era and in a short career set a number records that would stand deep into the 20th century. This included 13 titles as Champion Jockey and 246 wins a season. One can only speculate what his final career statistics would have been had it not been for his tragic suicide aged just 29 on 8th November 1886.
