After James Pollard (1792-1867) RACE FOR THE GREAT ST. LEGER STAKES, 1836 engraved by J. Harris, Plate I, titled "Vexation - the False Start", original hand coloured aquatint,51 by 71cm., London, Published May 24th 1837, by Ackermann & Co, 96 Strand, maple veneer frame with gilt edging, 64 by 84cm . The 1836 St Leger was won by the Earl of Lichfield's Elis, although in reality was owned by Lord George Bentinck. This was the famous occasion when Elis was transported to Doncaster in a horse-drawn horse box, a fact unknown by the bookmakers.
