A racing plate worn by Golden Miller when winning the Grand National 23rd March 1934 and completing a unique steeplechasing seasonal double having already won the Cheltenham Gold Cup earlier in the month (6th March), the plate is mounted on a polished oak shield, together with a silvered plaque inscribed WORN BY GOLDEN MILLER, WHEN WINNING THE GRAND NATIONAL AT AINTEE 1934, IN THE RECORD TIME OF 9 MIN 28 SECS., CARRYING 12 ST 2 LBS, TRAINED BY A.B. BRISCOE, RIDDEN BY G WILSON, OWNER MISS PAGET, additionally mounted with a yellow & blue silk roundel in the colours of Miss Paget, the blue silk now faded, the shield with easel support, 33 by 30cm. Golden Miller was trained by Basil Briscoe at Beechwood House Stables at Exning on the outskirts of Newmarket from autumn 1932 until shortly after the 1935 Grand National. After a disagreement between Dorothy Paget and Basil Briscoe he left the trainer’s care. Basil Briscoe had previously trained on the Longstowe Estate, west of Cambridge, and initially Golden Miller was trained there. Golden Miller remains the only horse to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Grand National in the same year (1934). He is still the most successful Cheltenham Gold Cup horse, recording five consecutive victories between 1932 and 1936.
