A hoof of Eremon the 1907 Grand National winner, converted into a hallmarked silver ink well, silver racing plate to the underside, the lid inscribed EREMON, WINNER OF THE GRAND NATIONAL, AND LANCASHIRE STEEPLECHASE, 1907; sold together with an album of ephemera relating to Alf Newey's career as a jockey and trainer including newspaper cuttings and photographs including action shots, some entitled Sandown, Hurst Park and Aintree, most 1920/30s, a copy of Heroes and Heroines of The Grand National by Finch Mason with inscription in pencil 'To Alfred Newey, One of the heroes from Stanley Howard' and Newey's 6x Helinox binoculars in leather case by Goerz, Berlin Provenance: Alfred Newey, Eremon's jockey, and later a racehorse trainer, then by family descent. Sold at Harper Field, 12th July 2023, lot 312 Eremon won the 1907 Grand National at odds of 8-1. The Irish-bred gelding was owned by Stanley Howard and trained by Tom Coulthwaite. Alfred Newey gave Eremon a remarkable ride as a stirrup leather broke at the second fence. Additionally he had to contend with a loose horse interfering with their progress for a circuit. Alf Newey was born in Cradley in 1882 and applied for his jockey's licence in 1902. Newey also won the Scottish Grand National on Creoline and the Welsh Champion Hurdle on Assaroe. He later trained from stables at Hednesford from where he sent out a winner of the Liverpool Foxhunters Chase A watercolour of Eremon winning the 1907 Grand National is being offered as lot 342.
