Racing plate worn by Red Rum when winning his record third Grand National in 1977, fully authenticated by the triple Grand National winner’s trainer Donald ‘Ginger’ McCain, the racing plate mounted on pale green background alongside colour photograph, 19 by 23cm., of his triumphant moment passing the winning post and cover image from the day's racecard, together with four additional pages listing all runners, and a silvered plaque engraved Racing plate worn by Red Rum when winning the 1977 Grand National, mounted, framed and glazed, overall 59 by 74.5cm.; sold with an official headed card personally signed by trainer Ginger McCain reading I confirm that this racing plate owned by Taffy Williams, my head lad, was worn by Red Rum in the 1977 Grand National; the lot also including an official racecard for the 1977 Grand National (3) Red Rum's 1977 Grand National victory was a unique moment in the race's long history, being the only occasion on which a horse has won three times - a record unlikely ever to be equalled. In addition to success in 1973, 1974 and 1977, Red Rum finished second in 1975 and 1976 and, in retirement from racing, became a much-loved celebrity, making personal appearances nationwide. He lived to the age of 30 and is buried at the Aintree winning post. The 1977 racecard also features among the jockeys Charlotte Brew who that year became the first female to ride in the Grand National.
