James Thorpe (1876-1949) ORIGINAL DESIGNS FOR TILES AT LORD'S CRICKET GROUND blue wash heightened with white, based on the cricketer Alfred Mynn, an acclaimed all-rounder from the sport's 'roundarm era', and whose portly physique is captured in various 19th century artworks and illustrations, each drawing 16cm. square, mounted side-by-side, framed & glazed, overall 40 by 56cm.; sold together with a pair of 16cm. square-shaped tiles, ex-Lord's Cricket Ground made to Thorpe's designs by the Devon Fire Co., in the Delft blue & white style, both in a matching wooden frame; sold together with an auction catalogue for the M.C.C. Bicentenary Auction held at Christie's South Kensington, 13th April 1987, where the design and tiles were purchased as lots 10 and 743, (4)
