George Frederick Wheldon's Aston Villa 1897 FA Cup Final winner's medal, 15ct gold, circular form with pierced scroll mount and 9ct gold loop ring, obverse with central three lions shield flanked by two footballers and a ball, engraved 1897 with Reg. No. 225727, reverse inscribed ASTON VILLA F.C. WINNERS ENGLISH CUP G.F. WHELDON within laurel leaves stamped THE FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION, 15ct gold, Birmingham 1896 by Constantine & Floyd, diameter 31mm., 19 gr. George Frederick (Fred) Wheldon (1869-1924) played at inside forward for England and several football clubs including Aston Villa, Small Heath and West Bromwich Albion. He also played County Cricket for Worcestershire.Aston Villa beat Everton 3-2 in this Final, held at Crystal Palace on 10th April 1897. Wheldon scored the second Aston Villa goal in the 35th minute, their other goals coming from John Campbell and Jimmy Crabtree.
