Jockey's trophy for the 1919 Grand National won by Ernie Piggott on Poethlynin the form of silver claret jug, hallmarked Elkington & Co, Sheffield, 1913, on ebonised socle base, overall 48 by 20cm., 520gr., heavily embossed with foliage and cherubic figures, hinged lid and inscribed PRESENTED TO E. PIGGOTT BY THE LIVERPOOL EXECUTIVE ON THE OCCASION OF HIS WINNING THE GRAND NATIONAL STEEPLECHASE ON MRS HUGH PEEL'S POETHLYN ON MARCH 28th 1919. Substantial dents to rear of jug near the blank cartouche, two dents to front near inscription cartouche, pedestal base shows signs of squashing, hence leading slightly, cover does not close flush to the body, surface scratches, otherwise good condition. Poethlyn was the last of only four horses to carry the maximum weight of 12st. 7lb. to victory in the Grand National. Bred by Major Hugh Peel, owned by his wife and trained at Lewes by Harry Escott, Poethlyn had won the previous year's 'War Substitute' National at Gatwick, again ridden by Lester's grandfather Ernie Piggott, before the race returned to Aintree in 1919 when it was known as the 'Victory National'. The partnership won by eight lengths. Ernie Piggott had previously also won the Grand National in 1912 on Jerry M. Provenance: from the Lester Piggott Collection.
