Pair of Choisy Le Roi majolica Japanesque plates, early 20th century, each of circular form depicting a cricket scene with green glaze on the first and a judo scene with mustard glaze on the second, each 23cm. diameter, both have hairline cracks and crazing Judo was founded in Japan in 1882 by Kano Jigoro Shihan, combining jujitsu wrestling with mental discipline. As an educational exercise derived from the martial arts, judo became an official Olympic sport at the 1964 Tokyo Games, having previously been mooted as a demonstration event at the 1940 cancelled Games.
