Claudine Bouzonnet-Stella (French, 1636-1697), LE BALLON JEU DE PAUMErestrike engraving depicting four cherubs playing Jeu de Paume, mounted and framed, 29.5 by 32cm. Claudine Bouzonnet-Stella was a French engraver, most of whose prints were after works by Nicholas Poussin or her uncle Jacques Stella, from whom she received her artistic education. Jeu de Paume was a ball and court game originating in France and an indoor precursor of tennis. Played in its infancy without racquets, which were eventually introduced, it is a former Olympic sport,  now known as real tennis, court tennis or courte paume.
